City of London Apology to LGBT2Q Communities
Pride London Festival was very happy to hear about Mayor Matt Brown & London City Council’s decision to make a formal apology to London’s LGBT2Q+ communities for the discrimination faced in the 1990s.
See Mayor Brown’s announcement below:
Good morning,
In 1995, the City of London’s City Council refused to issue a Gay Pride Proclamation and the proud leaders of the Homophile Association of London Ontario (HALO) fought this injustice and won. In 1997, it was decided by the Ontario Human Rights Commission that the City of London and Mayor Haskett had discriminated against HALO in the provision of municipal service.
After discussion with our LGBT+ community and former city councillors we feel it is time to issue an apology. Please join me on the front steps of City Hall on Friday, January 12, at 11:00am as I issue an overdue apology to our LGBT+ community. A reception in Committee Room #1 will immediately follow.
Sincerely,
Mayor Matt Brown
If you are able, we encourage you to join us at 11:00am on Friday, January 12th on the steps of London City Hall. A reception will follow.
